![]() Let’s discuss what makes Axiom Verge one of the most interesting and noteworthy titles that this subgenre has to offer.Īxiom Verge begins its tale with a man named Trace as he is working in his laboratory as a frozen pressure valve explodes, knocking him unconscious. After taking an hour-long walk to ponder the game’s ending and reflecting on the story and world that I had just ventured through, one thing was clear to me: although certainly flawed and showing some symptoms of archaic design, Axiom Verge nevertheless creates a setting that is as mysterious and haunting as it is fun. Upon hearing countless recommendations for this title, in addition to its sci-fi, Alien-esque atmosphere and vibe that it gave me, I was exciting to jump into the world of Axiom Verge. The world that Happ created seemed so bizarre and erudite, yet at the same time, the game’s aesthetics and visual design were familiar, reminding many people of the original Metroid. Expansive and ambitious games that are developed by single developers instantly garner attention and with Axiom Verge, this was for good reason. One indie Metroidvania title that has been the center of many conversations between those familiar with the genre is Axiom Verge, an otherworldly exploration-focused Metroidvania that, like Cave Story before it, was entirely developed by one man by the name of Tom Happ. This inspiration brings new titles that hope to be the next landmark Metroidvania title to to awe players and motivate aspiring developers alike. ![]() This subgenre and the games within it have inspired so many people throughout the years. The aforementioned Cave Story is a particularly noteworthy example of the Metroidvania subgenre, as it was quite famously developed by one person, doubtlessly inspiring hundreds, if not thousands of fledgling game developers, convincing them that anyone is capable of making a great game no matter the size of the team that made it. Indie developers, in particular, have really welcomed this genre with open arms, and have been diligently exploring what this genre is capable of. ![]() What I’m trying to get across with this long-winded intro is that this subgenre is responsible for creating games with worlds, stories, and gameplay loops that resonate with so many people. Players then get to see more of this awe-inspiring world through gaining access to new abilities that let them reach new areas or navigate through previously explored areas more quickly and conveniently. That game paints a beautiful, yet desolate remnant of a bygone civilization as its setting - one that immediately captures the player’s wonder. Super Metroid, in particular, is one of my favorite games of all time. These titles defined how to intrinsically tie player progression with exploration, making for the ever-satisfying experience of being able to explore more of the world upon acquiring new abilities and/or equipment. Landmark titles such as Super Metroid, Castlevania: Symphony of the NIght, and Cave Story pushed what 2D worlds could be. Other games like the Xenoblade Chronicles games deepened my love for games that took the time to build detailed, vast worlds that encouraged player intrigue and exploration.īut no genre nails this idea as thoroughly and consistently as the community-dubbed “Metroidvania” genre - and for good reason. Not only did Retro Studios create a world that felt rich, but it was one that begged to be conquered and understood by the player. The addition of a scan visor made the very act of exploration a reward in and of itself. The time in which I first truly noticed my admiration for these traits was with Metroid Prime with its masterful scan visor, which made exploring the world a fun gameplay experience and something that taught the player more about game’s world if they so desired. Whenever I picked up a controller and stared perhaps too closely to a television as I got lost in virtual worlds while growing up, I took notice of the definitive traits that I liked about the games I played: exploration, story, and immersive worldbuilding. When we begin a game, whether we’ve been gaming for over twenty years or we’ve been given our first game ever, we ask ourselves the same question: what will make this game valuable to me? Especially as a kid, when your options of what media you can engage with feels significantly limited, you learn to take the positives of any experience you have and begin development an awareness of the kinds of traits and qualities that you look for in other pieces of media.Īt least, that’s how it was for me.

![]() The "Malenkov-Khrushchev nuclear doctrine" involved the adoption of geopolitical and military challenges to the United States and the participation of the USSR in the nuclear race but "in a distinctly asymmetrical style". ![]() The Tsar Bomba was not designed as a weapon, but as a proof-of-concept that larger warheads were possible and to exert psychological pressure on the United States. Research had also shown that the ammunition size of a thermonuclear weapon could be increased with minimal cost increases of 60 cents (in 1950s USD) per kiloton of TNT-equivalent explosive power. The aim was to achieve – without pursuing a quantitative parity with the US in terms of nuclear weapons and means of delivery – sufficient "guaranteed retaliation with an unacceptable level of damage to the enemy" in the event of a nuclear strike on the USSR via qualitatively superior nuclear power. In addition to being created for political, propagandistic use and as a response to the nuclear deterrence capabilities then possessed by the United States, the Tsar Bomba was created as part of the strategic nuclear forces concept of the USSR, adopted during the rule of Georgy Malenkov and Nikita Khrushchev. Kúz'kina mát', IPA: ), possibly referring to First secretary Nikita Khrushchev's promise to "show the United States a Kuzma's mother" (an idiom roughly translating to "We'll show you") at a 1960 session of the United Nations General Assembly. The bomb was also referred to as Kuzma's mother (Russian: Ку́зькина ма́ть, tr. Many codenames are attributed to the Tsar Bomba: Project 7000 product code 202 (Izdeliye 202), "Product V" ( izdeliye V) article designations RDS-220 (РДС-220), RDS-202 (РДС-202), RN202 (PH202, incorrect codename as the AN602 is a modification of the RN202), AN602 (AH602) codename Vanya nicknames Big Ivan, Kuzkina mat. The name "Tsar Bomba" was coined in an analogy with other large Russian objects: the Tsar Bell and Tsar Cannon. The CIA designated the test as "JOE 111". The remaining bomb casings are located at the Russian Atomic Weapon Museum in Sarov and the Museum of Nuclear Weapons, All-Russian Research Institute of Technical Physics, at Snezhinsk. The bhangmeter results and other data suggested the bomb yielded about 58 megatons of TNT (240 PJ), which was the accepted yield in technical literature until 1991, when Soviet scientists revealed that their instruments indicated a yield of 50 Mt (210 PJ). As they had the instrumental data and access to the test site, their yield figure has been accepted as more accurate. In theory, the bomb would have had a yield in excess of 100 Mt (420 PJ) if it had included a uranium-238 fusion tamper but, because only one bomb was built to completion, that capability has never been demonstrated. The US apparently had an instrumented KC-135R aircraft (Operation SpeedLight) in the area of the test – close enough to have been scorched by the blast. The bomb was detonated 4,000 metres (13,000 ft) above the Sukhoy Nos ("Dry Nose") cape of Severny Island, Novaya Zemlya, 15 km (9.3 mi) from Mityushikha Bay, north of Matochkin Strait. The detonation was secret but was detected by United States intelligence agencies. Tested on 30 October 1961 as an experimental verification of calculation principles and multi-stage thermonuclear weapon designs, it also remains the most powerful human-made explosive ever detonated. There's nu-disco and boogie funk, nodding back to disco bands with soaring vocals and dance floor-designed instrumentation. ![]() Today, funk lives in many places, with its heavy bass and syncopated grooves finding way into many nooks and crannies of music. The sound influenced contemporaneous hip-hop, funk and electronica, along with acts around the globe, while current acts like Chromeo, DJ Stingray, and even Egyptian Lover himself keep electro-funk alive and well. A key distinguishing factor of electro-funk is a de-emphasis on vocals, with more phrases than choruses and verses. In the 1980s, electro-funk was born when artists like Afrika Bambaataa, Man Parrish, and Egyptian Lover began making futuristic beats with the Roland TR-808 drum machine - often with robotic vocals distorted through a talk box. Both Collins and Clinton remain active and funkin', and have offered their timeless grooves to collabs with younger artists, including Kali Uchis, Silk Sonic, and Omar Apollo and Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, and Thundercat, respectively. Legendary funk bassist Bootsy Collins learned the power of the one from playing in Brown's band, and brought it to George Clinton, who created P-funk, an expansive, Afrofuturistic, psychedelic exploration of funk with his various bands and projects, including Parliament-Funkadelic. Of course, many other funk acts followed in the '60s, and the genre thrived in the '70s and '80s as the disco craze came and went, and the originators of hip-hop and house music created new music from funk and disco's strong, flexible bones built for dancing. As David Cheal eloquently explains, playing on the one "left space for phrases and riffs, often syncopated around the beat, creating an intricate, interlocking grid which could go on and on." You know a funky bassline when you hear it its fat chords beg your body to get up and groove.īrown's 1965 classic, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," became one of the first funk hits, and has been endlessly sampled and covered over the years, along with his other groovy tracks. The Godfather of Soul coined the phrase and style of playing known as "on the one," where the first downbeat is emphasized, instead of the typical second and fourth beats in pop, soul and other styles.
